Separated from mainland Greece by the Corinth Canal, the Peloponnese peninsula, also known as Moreas, is the ideal location for water sports and outdoor activities. Holiday rentals in the region, which is easily reached from the mainland by the Rio–Antirrio bridge, are popular with travellers from around the world especially during the summer.
What to see in the Peloponnese
Known internationally for its olives and with a history dating back to the time of Homer, Kalamata is an ideal place to book a holiday home or rent a holiday house in the Peloponnese. This modern and vibrant city is also home to historic attractions such as the Frankish castle situated beneath its historic old town and the archaeological museum on Benaki Street. A holiday apartment will give you the flexibility to enjoy swimming and sunbathing at Polylimnia, which is famous for its rock pools. The Mani region is a popular destination for holiday rentals among walkers who are drawn to its vast network of ancient kalderimis (stone paths used for mules). The most enjoyable route starts from Sotirianika at the Agios Nikolaos church and ends in the town of Kambos. Along the way, you can take pictures of an 18th century stone bridge and have picnic at the romantic Koskaraka Gorge. The picturesque area around Mount Taygetos in Mani features long, deep gorges such as those at Rindomo and Viros. When to visit the Peloponnese
Most travellers chose to visit the Peloponnese peninsula during spring when the weather is pleasant and warm and ideal for hiking in the mountains or swimming in the sea. Summer, however, is reserved for the sun worshippers. In July and August, temperatures in the Peloponnese can can rise above 40°C, it is also the busiest time of year and finding a holiday house by the beach can be hard.
